The Daugavpils International Airport (Latvian: Daugavpils Starptautiskā Lidosta) is located in village of Lociki, Naujene parish, Daugavpils district, Latgale region, Latvia. It is also located 12 km northeast of Daugavpils.
All of the airport's technical infrastructure, runway and buildings are what was left of the former Soviet military air base. The base was completely abandoned, but as of 2005 it is under major development to become Daugavpils International Airport. The construction is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
In order to implement the project Daugavpils City Council founded Daugavpils lidosta Ltd. (Daugavpils Airport Ltd.) to develop the former military air base into Daugavpils International Airport.
They plan to build an international and regional airport in Daugavpils within the next few years suitable for large-scale airplanes which will allow for both international and domestic passenger traffic, international and domestic cargo transport and charter flights. They have intention to build a runway of 2500 m in length and 46 m in width.
The building of an international regional airport will also lead to the further development of other activities in the area based on servicing the airport and its customers and more work by to attract investment in the area.
When opened, the airport will probably be a destination for airlines from Riga - the first real Latvian cross-country flights, as well as probably from Moscow (due to large Russian community) and from Warsaw (due to large Polish community), also maybe from Germany. The flights inside the EU (from Riga, Warsaw, German cities) will probably be mainly budget airlines.
In the past, it was home to 372 APIB (372nd Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment) flying MiG-23 and MiG-27 aircraft.
