Belgian football league system

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Belgian football league system is a series of interconnected leagues for club football in Belgium.

Below shows how the current system works. For each division, its official name, sponsorship name (which often differs radically from its official name) and number of clubs is given. Each division promotes to the division(s) that lie directly above them and relegates to the division(s) that lie directly below them.

In 2007, a proposal was made by the amateur clubs in third and fourth division to change the structure of Belgian football. In this proposal, third and fourth division were to be changed into one division three of 18 teams, below that two divisions at level 4 and three divisions at level 5. This would create an extra fifth level of national football and would shift the regional divisions down one level. Although a lot of positive reactions are heard towards this proposal, it is still yet to be accepted and can not be implemented before season 2009-2010.
