The hammer throw at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Athens Olympic Stadium August 23 and August 25.

A new Olympic Record was set four times during the course of the 2004 event. Gu Yuan did it first, with her throw in the qualifying round. Olga Kuzenkova beat Gu's record during her throws in the qualifying round. Three other athletes also beat the 2000 distance during that round. Kuzenkova then extended her record twice in the final round.
